Switching from Another Birth Control Method

It’s easy to switch to ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN LO from another birth control pill without compromising protection. Just start your new pack of ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN LO pills when you would have started the next pack of your previous brand of birth control pills. If you carefully follow these instructions, you should not have to use a backup method of birth control.

If you are switching from a birth control method other than the Pill, use the following instructions and pay close attention to whether you need to use a backup method of contraception, such as condoms or spermicide. Remember, your healthcare professional is the best person to provide guidance on switching birth control methods.

Nonhormonal Birth Control Methods

Are you using a birth control method that doesn’t deliver hormones into your body, such as a copper intrauterine device (IUD), diaphragm, or condoms? Simply begin your first pack of pills using either a Sunday Start or a Day 1 Start. If you choose a Sunday Start, use a backup method of contraception for 7 days (1 week).

Birth Control Patch

Switching from the birth control patch is similar to switching from another birth control pill. Wait until you finish using the third patch of your cycle. In the fourth week, begin your first pack of pills using either a Sunday Start or a Day 1 Start. If you choose a Sunday Start, use a backup method of contraception for 7 days (1 week).

Vaginal Ring

Remove the vaginal ring after 3 weeks of use, as you normally would. In the fourth week, begin your first pack of pills using either a Sunday Start or a Day 1 Start, whichever comes first. If you choose a Sunday Start, use a backup method of contraception for 7 days (1 week). You may not have a period this month, but this is to be expected.

Injection

There is only one type of injection. Talk to your healthcare professional about how long after your last injection you should wait to begin your birth control pill (depending on your type of injection, it may be anywhere from 4 to 13 weeks). When your healthcare professional says it is safe to start the birth control pill, begin your first pack of pills using either a Sunday Start or a Day 1 Start. If you choose a Sunday Start, use a backup method of contraception for 7 days (1 week).
